What Is the ICBC Knowledge Test?

The ICBC knowledge test is a written multiple-choice exam required to obtain your Class 7 Learner's Licence (L) in British Columbia. The test consists of 50 questions drawn from the official ICBC Learn to Drive Smart guide, covering road signs, rules of the road, speed limits, intersections, parking, and safe driving practices.

You have 45 minutes to complete the exam and must answer at least 40 out of 50 questions correctly — an 80% passing score — to earn your learner's licence. The test is administered at any ICBC driver licensing office across BC, and you can retake it as many times as needed if you do not pass.

• Focus on road signs: Road signs account for roughly 25–30% of the test. Make sure you can identify every regulatory, warning, guide, and construction sign.
• Practice under timed conditions: The 45-minute limit can feel tight when you're nervous. Regular timed mock exams build the habit of moving at the right pace.
• Review every wrong answer: After each practice session, read the explanation for every incorrect answer. Understanding why an answer is wrong is more valuable than just knowing the right answer.
• Pay attention to speed limits: Speed limit questions — including playground zones, school zones, and municipal vs. highway limits — are commonly missed. Review them carefully.
