What Is the ICBC 50-Question Knowledge Test?

The ICBC knowledge test is a 50-question multiple-choice exam that every new driver in British Columbia must pass to obtain a Class 7 Learner's Licence (the "L"). Questions are drawn from the official Learn to Drive Smart handbook and cover eight main topic categories: road signs, rules of the road, speed limits, intersections, parking, sharing the road, highway driving, and alcohol and drugs.

You have exactly 45 minutes to answer all 50 questions, and you must answer at least 40 correctly — an 80% passing score — to earn your learner's licence. The test is administered at any ICBC driver licensing office across BC. Each attempt costs $15 and you can retake it as many times as needed.

Practicing with a full 50-question mock exam is one of the most effective preparation strategies because it trains your ability to manage the time limit, builds familiarity with the question format, and reveals which topics you need to review before the real test.

5 Tips for Passing the ICBC 50-Question Test

1
Manage your time: The real ICBC test gives you 45 minutes for 50 questions — about 54 seconds per question. If you are unsure, make a reasonable guess and move on.
2
Pay attention to road signs: Road signs account for roughly 25–30% of test questions. Review all regulatory, warning, guide, and construction sign categories.
3
Know the speed limits: School zones, playground zones, and municipal vs. highway limits are commonly tested. Review them until they are automatic.
4
Review every wrong answer: Understanding why an answer is wrong is more valuable than simply memorising the correct answer.
5
Read the full Learn to Drive Smart guide: Every question on the ICBC test is drawn from this official handbook. Chapters on intersections, parking, and alcohol are frequently tested.
