What Is the ICBC Knowledge Test in British Columbia?
The ICBC knowledge test — also called the BC driving knowledge test — is the written exam that British Columbia requires before you can get your Class 7 Learner's Licence. It is administered by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) at driver licensing offices across the province.
The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from the ICBC Driver's Guide (also known as the Learn to Drive Smart manual). Questions cover road signs, rules of the road, speed limits, intersections, parking, sharing the road, and the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP). To pass, you must score at least 80% — meaning 40 correct answers out of 50.
Each attempt costs $15. If you fail, you are required to wait 7 days before booking another appointment. There is no cap on the number of attempts, but each try requires paying the fee again. This makes proper preparation — through practice tests and reviewing the ICBC Driver's Guide — especially important before your first visit to the licensing office.
You must take the test in person at an ICBC driver licensing office. Online testing is not available. You can book your appointment at icbc.com or by calling 1-800-950-1498. The test is displayed on a computer terminal at the office and is available in over 10 languages, including English, French, Punjabi, and Mandarin.
Passing the knowledge test is the first step toward getting your full BC driver's licence. After passing, you will receive your Class 7 Learner's Licence, which allows you to drive under the supervision of a fully licensed driver while you progress through the Graduated Licensing Program. The knowledge test is designed to confirm that new drivers understand BC road laws, traffic signs, and safe driving practices before they get behind the wheel unsupervised.

How to Pass the ICBC Knowledge Test
- 1
Study the ICBC Driver's Guide
Read the Learn to Drive Smart manual (available free at icbc.com) cover to cover at least once. Pay extra attention to road signs, intersection rules, and speed limits — the most commonly tested topics.
- 2
Practice BC road sign questions
Road signs account for a large portion of the BC knowledge test. Use BC Driving Test Practice to practice sign recognition until you can identify every sign without hesitation.
- 3
Take full mock exams
Simulate the real 50-question exam under timed conditions. Mock exams build the mental endurance and familiarity with question formats that reduce anxiety on test day.
- 4
Review explanations carefully
Don't just mark answers right or wrong — read the explanation for every question you miss. Understanding the reason behind the correct answer is what prevents repeating the same mistakes.
- 5
Book your test when you consistently score 90%+
The 80% passing threshold leaves little room for error. Aim to score 90% or higher on multiple consecutive practice tests before booking your appointment at an ICBC driver licensing office.

"The most reassuring thing is that a guarantee is given to pass the driver's test the first time — that is so TRUE! I practised for 3 days and went in for my test the next day and I passed it!"
